The workers will vote on it Saturday.

“It’s been a lot of hard work,” said Y’aneris Olivencia, communications coordinator for SEIU Texas. “I’m beyond proud of the members because they have been willing from day one to do whatever it takes, whether that was on the bargaining table or that was on the streets.”

Roughly 2,800 janitors are employed by cleaning contractors that include ABM Industries and Pritchard, both of New York, ISS of San Antonio, Compass of Charlotte, N.C., Velociti of Riverside, Mo., and Sodexo of Gaithersburg, Md. Mirna Blanco has worked for ABM for 20 years. She said the increased salary will help her stay on top of expenses - especially now with inflation.

“Because of the inflation, because of gas going up, food going up, it was just really hard to keep up,” she said through a translator. “So this is going to help me a little bit with that.” Their contract expired Tuesday at midnight, and union members were authorized to strike after that contract expired, but they continued negotiating Wednesday.“We feel that this agreement is fair and will chip away at the racial and gender inequity that exists in this city,” SEIU Texas President Elsa Caballero said in a statement.
