Although little more than a footnote, it’s still one of the most titillating stories in the Bible: Salome, a young Jewish princess, dances for her stepfather, King Herod, in exchange for anything she wants. She chooses the head of John the Baptist, who had criticized her mother’s marriage to the king, and gets it.
In a very real way, Strauss’ opera, which returns to HGO April 28-May 12, set the tone for the contentious and unruly musical century to come. New Yorker music critic Alex Ross opens his essential 2007 book “The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century” with a fascinating account of the multi-city “Salome” premiere tour: beloved in Dresden, Graz, and most of Europe but censored in Vienna and scorned at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, where it was subsequently banned for nearly 30 years.
“Some people go to the theater to be elevated in some sort of happier world than what they’re living,” Wilson continues. “So for the weak of heart, I don't recommend this opera. It’s really for those who like to see dramas of life put onstage, and how these daring realities are put to music and made into theater.”
“Everything today is controversial, absolutely everything,” Dastoor says. “And so as a leader, it’s very comforting that I don’t work at a company that doesn’t have experience with absorbing slings and arrows. Are we going to allow external responses and fears to distract and derail us, or are we going to remain resolved in our commitment to producing art at the highest levels?”
