HISD principals have a lot of say in how their budgets are used when it comes to staffing, but the superintendent's plan could change that and now officials are reconsidering the shift.
. House plans for funds to come from the central office for certain staff and programs, making a baseline of resources and equitable staffing across all of the schools in the district.
"I told him back in February, 'This is going to be a hard struggle for you. I've seen this before," said Jackie Anderson, the president of the Houston Federation of Teachers.On Monday, the chief of schools sent an email to HISD principals asking them to pause their budget planning as the team revisits the budget strategy. It's a move Anderson said she was disappointed in, but not surprised by.
"Until somebody makes a decision to take those schools, the least and give them what they need, to bring them up, there's never going to be equity in HISD. Never," said Anderson. Her concern, more so than a centralized versus decentralized budget, is that they make a hasty decision with big consequences.
