Angelina Castillo, an iEducate tutor, demonstrates how she works with third grade students on their math skills at Briscoe Elementary School on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022 in Houston.Less than half of Houston ISD first, second and third graders are reading at grade level, creating concern among educators about a possible domino effect that could put students behind for years.

Angelina Castillo, an iEducate tutor, demonstrates how she works with third grade students on their math skills at Briscoe Elementary School on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022 in Houston. For instance, in North Carolina, Charlotte-Mecklenburg ISD fourth graders averaged, 13 points higher on the reading examination, but has about half as many families on food stamps, and the median income is 65 percent higher than in Houston.

She thought about possibly putting her two older children in tutoring to help them catch up, but the expense isn’t feasible. Her husband does car detailing and other labor, and Fadic is an outreach coordinator for a church in the area. “I felt like I wasn’t getting the depth of understanding I normally get while teaching certain concepts,” Williams said. “So, I started digging into reading data.”

Before COVID, she would often have students work together in groups, share materials or have rotating workstations, but in the early days of the pandemic they were social distancing. Although it was the right move from a public health standpoint, it made it more difficult to use these techniques, she said.
