Second Servings of Houston, a nonprofit that rescues perishable and prepared food, has a new PopUp Grocery program, designed to fight food waste, food insecurity, climate change and inflation.
Across the nation, grocery prices have jumped 13.5 percent, and in the Houston area,– up 17 percent since August 2021, the largest annual increase in nearly 50 years.
The “free shopping experience,” as Second Servings calls it, was welcome relief given the inflation that has increased County's grocery bills, her utility bills, and her overall cost of living.At PopUp Grocery, tables were covered with roughly 3,000 pounds of food donated by Houston locations of grocers such as Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Spec’s, as well as local producers.
Second Servings launched in 2015. Its overarching mission is to rescue and redirect prepared and perishable food from banquets, retailers, hotels and sports venues to shelters, soup kitchens, recovery centers and other venues.
