Houston’s coolest new hidden bar offers dim sum-style bites and Asian-inspired cocktails
, restaurateur Benjamin Berg’s Cuban-inspired bar tucked away in the corner of The Annie Cafe & Bar; Sushi by Hidden, a new sushi joint that’s hidden behind a giant Mona Lisa painting; Patton’s Steakhouse, accessed through the door of a back bar of Savoir in the Heights; and Bandista, a cocktail bar with a secret bookcase entrance at the Four Seasons Hotel Houston.
The brainchild of Dao, his wife Anh Nguyen, and husband-and-wife team Marco Juarez and Charity Brown, the 1,500 square foot space has 50 seats and serves cocktails and dumplings, among other snacks. “I wanted to play with the versatility of a dumpling,” he said. “It seemed like the perfect vessel that could be dressed up or down while still being very approachable for a bar concept.”
Affordably priced between $7 and $13, there are currently eight dishes on the menu. Dao plans to play with pierogi next, and will add menu items as they make sense.Highlights include a gin-based Lychee Gimlet ; the Salty Kitty, made of salted plum infused vodka, with fresh lemon juice, orange bourbon tincture and egg white; and the Nonamé, made with rum, orgeat, maraschino cherry and coconut cream and served in a Instagram-worthy cat-shaped porcelain cup.
