Four Houthi fighters were also killed and several were wounded in the attack in the border area between the southern provinces of Lahj and Al Bayda, according to military sources.
Yemen has been gripped by conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa in 2014, triggering a Saudi-led military intervention in support of the beleaguered government the following year.
Sunday's attack came as the UN special envoy in Yemen, Hans Grundberg, held talks with Ali Asghar Khaji, an adviser to Iran's foreign minister. The southern separatist forces are backed by the United Arab Emirates, a key partner in the Saudi-led coalition and ally of the Yemen government in its fight against the Houthis.
