The founder, chief executive and major shareholder of WiseTech Global, Richard White, has found himself embroiled in a civil court case involving lurid accusations, raising the question of when private affairs matter for publicly-listed companies.
Leather clad, largish and with a passion for guitars, he's skirted both the business mainstream and the cool vibes of the tech bros, remaining in relative obscurity despite his enormous wealth. Richard White , the self-made man from Bexley in Sydney's south, has found his image along with a swathe of embarrassing revelations about his private life splashed across the tabloids and the more serious news outlets.
They include some of the country's biggest superannuation funds, including the Future Fund, which prefer those running the companies in which they invest to adhere to a strict code of conduct. According to the external review, which made 22 recommendations to management, "bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment" had become the norm.
But the world has changed in two important ways — the first is that corporate leaders now are held to account and promptly dispatched if they are found to be not up to scratch. His life outside the company had already attracted the attention of gossip columnists, when his now-wife Zena Nasser, a former criminal defence lawyer, uploaded videos of the pair frolicking in the south of France.
She successfully garnisheed his bank account, applying for some $92,000, and he retaliated with a bankruptcy motion to recover the cash. While the soap opera plays out in public, the affair is testing the boundaries of what now is considered acceptable behaviour.
