Queensland's Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said she was 'extremely lucky' her hairdresser noticed a dark spot on her scalp, which prompted an early diagnosis of a potentially deadly cancer.

Ms D'Ath revealed she had visited a hair salon for her birthday on July 26 when her hairdresser Tahnee Hudson noticed something unusual.

She said Ms Hudson stopped to ask if she had her skin checked, before showing her a photo of a dark spot on her scalp. Stream more health news with Flash. 25+ news channels in 1 place. New to Flash? "I knew what a bad skin spot looks like, it was abnormal at the edges, it had dark spots, so I rang the skin doctor the next day and got in the following week for a biopsy, and the results confirmed what I thought when I saw it." Ms Hudson, who is the owner of The Mandala Room hair salon at Deception Bay, said it was actually the second time she had spotted a melanoma on a client's scalp."With Yvette, I was sectioning her hair to put a couple of foils in and I saw it straight away. It was not a consistent circle, its colour was uneven, its edges were uneven and I think I probably knew it was not benign, but I didn't want to panic her.
