Numerous reports say improving teacher effectiveness is the single most important factor in achieving student academic success. NSW is rolling out a solution.
Teachers at Bondi Public School will have an extra three hours per week to dedicate to their students when the new academic year begins, says principal Natalia Greguric.
It has been estimated that such resource hubs can save each teacher at least three hours a week. With 22 classes, that means freeing up a minimum of 66 hours a week or more than 2500 hours in the school year to put to more productive use.For example, if students in Years 5 and 6 are learning about fractions, the hub provides a sequence of activities that prod students to be able to identify the denominator, find the numerator and be able to express the problem in various ways.
Only 15 per cent said they had access to a common bank of high-quality curriculum materials for their classes. The figure was lower the more disadvantaged the school. “She’s part of the leadership team and will be working shoulder-to-shoulder with teachers to ensure they are using quality assured materials,” Ms Greguric said. The NSW Education Department has created a raft of materials designed to rid school executives and teaching staff of unproductive work.
“Schools may have 100 or more staff and an operating budget of several million dollars,” Ms Harrisson said.“However, the CEO of the business – the principal – is heavily involved with complex stakeholders including students, their families and local communities as well as the core business of providing educational leadership, as well as teaching classes for some.
