Over the past two years, 63-year-old ex-shearer Larry has put aside $80,000 for his retirement by taking part in South Australia's recycling scheme.Under SA law, a person seeking refunds on bottles sold outside that state can be fined up to $30,000
But Larry has been collecting bottles and cans in Victoria for the past two years and getting refunds over the border in South AustraliaHe works seven days a week, visiting sporting clubs to collect beverage containers that he then transports to one of the state's depots, where he is paid 10 cents per can and bottle.Under South Australian law, a person can be fined up to $30,000 for seeking refunds on beverage containers sold outside of that state.
The sports clubs love it. They save huge amounts of money in waste disposal, and are only too happy to give Larry a copy of the key to their skip bin.
