The crash at Spa-Francorchamps that killed GP3 champ Anthoine Hubert left Correa with severe leg injuries: “It is a nightmare you (think you’re) going to wake up from, but you don’t.”

That enforced break from Formula 2 has also allowed Correa to “see the big picture more clearly,” though he recognizes that some of that is age related. “It sounds clichéd, but when you go through something like that, it changes you, and for the better. In life, my approach to life and appreciation of things, there is a difference. I still try to be primitive in the sense of driving a car on the limit. You have to be very instinctual.

Each day Correa wakes up “sore, and the first 30 minutes on my feet is quite painful” before the ankle warms up. He has recently been able to take up golf and paddle tennis as he continues to explore what is and isn’t feasible post-accident. “I’m in that dilemma right now to probably wait as long before getting an ankle replacement, and once the pain gets really bad, I’ll get an ankle replacement. Hopefully that’ll last long enough to get me to the end of my racing career, and then either medicine will give me something else or I’ll just amputate the leg.”“I mean, it is weird , but I had to think about that all the time the last three years,” he says.

“Now I’m a little more convinced . I feel in my case, with what I’ve been through, age really has nothing to do with it. It’s going to be more about the results I can get in F2. To be racing in Formula 2, eyeing Formula 1, and have the potential to forge a professional competitive motorsport career after such a horrific accident is inspiring—and that is not lost on Correa, who is amiable and engaging company.
