None of it would have been possible, of course, without the department stores, but the family is no longer involved. “Retail’s tough. It is such a different landscape even from five years ago, let alone 40 years when my father and uncle were active in the business. The notion of a department store these days ... well, you can see there’s not many examples left.”“I really hope not,” he says. “It never ceases to surprise me how many people still like the notion of the Myer brand.
