The ‘Yes’ campaign is targeting Australia House - the largest single polling station - and got some wattage from Julia Gillard and an exuberant drag queen.

| The drab assembly room of a north London council in early autumn feels a long, long way from Australia. But on Wednesday night , those 16,000 kilometres melted away, as a crowd of about 100 Aussie expats kindled the fire and passion of the Voice debate back home.

But these lighter moments concealed a serious purpose. There are votes to be had in this town; and with the Yes campaign seemingly on the back foot, every one of them might count.at the Australian High Commission, while another 14,000 Aussies living in the UK submitted a postal vote. In previous, less pandemic-afflicted, elections the number queuing up to vote at Australia House has been anywhere from 14,000 to 20,000. It’s the largest single polling station at any Australian election.

Mr Newman told the story of Anthony Martin Fernando, an Aboriginal activist who apparently stood outside Australia House for three years in the late 1920s, handing out flyers that highlighted Indigenous injustice. Ms Gillard’s appearance was striking because although she has carved out a London-based role advocating for health and women’s issues, she rarely intervenes directly or explicitly in Australian domestic politics. She lamented the failure of successive governments, and the Australian political system as a whole, to address the problems facing Indigenous people and communities.

But Oxford University Rhodes Scholar Yasmin Poole seemed to suggest that the outcome could define how the world sees Australia. “This decision will shape who we are as a country,” she told the crowd.
