More than 70,000 grey-headed flying foxes perished from heat stress during the Black Summer of 2019, pushing them onto the endangered register. Now, researchers are finding new ways to chill their roosting spots.
"There's not really much that can be done in those situations," Greater Sydney parklands environment manager David Kirkland said.
Working through the night, while the bats were up and flying, workers installed 36 sprinkler systems and 1,860 metres of piping to the tops of the eucalyptus trees along the Parramatta River. "We haven't had any extreme heat days of over 42 degrees to really gauge the result," Dr Martin said. The Bureau of Meteorology announced a La Nina alert in late October, forecasting a wetter-than-average spring and summer for northern and eastern Australia.
