An ancient Buddhist practice could be putting local Sydney crustaceans at risk. 9News

An exotic jade-coloured species of abalone found among the rock pools of Australia's most iconic beach could form the precipice of an ecological disaster.

Jade Tigers – specifically bred by the CSIRO for consumption and export – are being found in the wild outside their natural habitat of abalone farms, fish markets and restaurants. The purpose-bred abalone is now being found in rock pools around Bondi Beach, concerning experts that believe the introduction of a new species could wipe out native residents.

"Like carp, cane toads, prickly pear – once these things are out into your ecosystems they just wreak absolute havoc," Commercial Abalone Diver Stephen Bunney told 9News. Known for its sweet white flesh, the Jade Tiger Abalone is carefully cultivated and easily identified with its green shell and black and white stripes. How they ended up around Bondi is still a mystery – but some believe an ancient Buddhist practice is endangering local wildlife., some Chinese Buddhists subscribe to the practice of purchasing animals that are due to be slaughtered and release them.
