Sam Walker is known for his attacking brilliance, but his defence was excellent in Las Vegas – and he has one Roosters legend to thank.

Extra wrestling and tackling sessions during a long hot summer with one of the toughest players to pull on a Sydney Roosters jersey has Sam Walker primed to return to the form that made him Dally M rookie of the year in 2021 as an 18-year-old.

“We’ve spent a lot of hours looking at video and doing extras at training, or even in the wrestle room. There are different positional tackles you have to make, whether it’s trying to bring down the back-rowers or stopping the fullbacks from slipping out the back. “I played around 79kg or 80kgs last year. Each year I’m playing two or three kilos heavier. Hopefully the upward trend continues. Who knows, I might hit puberty eventually.”

To make matters worse, Walker then suffered a partial tear in his ACL in just his second game in the lower grades and missed almost three months. As for why he thought he was dropped and what he had to work on, especially now he had some time to reflect, Walker says: “There wasn’t one area in particular. It was all aspects in my game, and trying to get the confidence back.
