Age readers react to the housing crisis in Victoria, and the fallout from the referendum.
The state government’s commitment to building 80,000 houses a year is a great target to overcome housing affordability. Without a plan on how to get there, it will remain a target and, unfortunately, a target that is unlikely to ever be met.
If Victoria is to drive a change of pace, we must embrace a change of housing model and a change of construction approach. Three- to four-storey buildings offer density with excellent human scale. Off-site manufacturing offers high-quality, fast construction that is weather protected and far safer for the tradies to work in centralised locations that avoid the need for people to drag tools and materials all over the city each day. Renewable power can be used.
In the absence of meaning, Australians voted it down. If instead, a name that told us exactly what the proposed body would and could only do, a descriptive name like the ″Indigenous Advisory Panel to Parliament″, had been used, perhaps Australia would be in a better place. Not sexy, but it does the job.
