The fifth season of the Formula 1 docuseries starts next week, but it might be the end of the road for its Australian star.

That is a reference to Max Verstappen’s limited co-operation during 2021 after he told the BBC, “It’s just not my thing, faking rivalries.” And some of the “fly-on-the-wall” scenes captured in season five seem remarkably fortuitous. When the cameras record a “social chat” between Alpine’s CEO and its team principal, for example, there’s precisely the amount of exposition and foreshadowing you’d include if it were scripted .
Ricciardo’s disastrous season with McLaren last year – covered in an episode brutally titled “Nice Guys Finish Last” – means season five could be the final one with Ricciardo featured as a driver. “It’s a damn shame,” says Gay-Rees, “unbelievable really … but he’s got a reserve seat with Red Bull so anything can happen.”
