Seeing an associated rise in the level of competition in professional sports leagues, sports have increasingly become more popular worldwide over the last century. However, this also means that winning games is more complex and difficult to achieve than ever before.in order to develop a competitive edge. This type of data science is referred to as sports analytics and it owes its popularity to a film released back in 2011.
Sports analytics was first introduced in the movie Moneyball. The movie focused on the story of Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics, who used sabermetrics to build a successful, winning team despite having a very small budget. Sabermetrics refers to the empirical analysis of baseball statistics and it is the science responsible for using raw stats, such as batting averages, to develop detailed models that can adequately evaluate a player’s performance.
