The World Health Organization once again declares mpox a public health emergency after rolling back an emergency declaration for the virus in mid-2023.
The World Health Organization has declared mpox a public health emergency after seeing an alarming rise in cases and a new form of the virus in DRC.
It has recorded more than 96 per cent of the world's roughly 17,000 recorded cases of mpox this year and some 500 deaths from the disease.DRC is now enduring its worst outbreak yet, with all 26 of its provinces recording cases of the virus, according to its state-run news agency. The 2022 outbreak led the WHO to declare an emergency that lasted until mid-2023, when it was shut down through the use of vaccines and treatments in wealthy countries.DRC Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said on Thursday that two years later, DRC still doesn't have a single dose.Duke University's Global Health Institute director Chris Beyrer said the global community missed multiple warning signs, including calls by experts to share vaccines with Africa.
That includes war, illicit mining industries that attract sex workers, transient populations near border regions and entrenched poverty. There haven't been any recent health campaigns to educate the tens of thousands of people in the camp about mpox, and Mr Faustin said he's worried about how many people might be undiagnosed."If nothing is done, we will all be infected here, or maybe we are already all infected."
