CLEVELAND, Ohio – Rainbow flags are flying high all over the nation as millions celebrate Pride Month. But where did the flag originate and how did it become an international symbol of the LGBTQ community?– California’s first openly gay man to be elected to public office – felt the movement needed some kind of positive, inclusive symbol to represent the gay community. So, he asked his friend, Gilbert Baker to create one.
Baker designed, dyed the fabric and hand-sewed the first rainbow flag -- which included eight colors -- to mimic a rainbow.hot pink for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic and art, indigo for serenity and violet for spirit.Before the rainbow flag, the pink triangle had become a worldwide symbol of gay pride, though it was intended to be one of shame.was sewn on the shirts of gay men to identify and further dehumanize them.
“I thought of the American flag with its thirteen stripes and thirteen stars, the colonies breaking away from England to form the United States,” Baker wrote in his unpublished memoir, excerpts of which appear on. “I thought of the vertical red, white, and blue tricolor from the French Revolution and how both flags owed their beginnings to a riot, a rebellion, or revolution. I thought a gay nation should have a flag too, to proclaim its own idea of power.
“As a community, both local and international, gay people were in the midst of an upheaval, a battle for equal rights, a shift in status where we were now demanding power, taking it. This was our new revolution: a tribal, individualistic, and collective vision. It deserved a new symbol,” Pride Rainbow flag creator Gilbert Baker marches in the 2003 Stockholm Pride Parade.
