Excessive heat in the area coupled with a lack of significant rain has caused the ground of several homes to shift.

In Dallas-Fort Worth, expansive clay soil is found underneath most homes. When this soil shrinks, it results in voids underneath foundations, which causes homes to drop, Bryant said.Trees also contribute to the sinking effect of foundations during a dry spell. Starved for water, trees and other vegetation in yards suck moisture out of the ground wherever they can, including underneath homes, Bryant said.

In addition to faulty windows and doors, foundation issues can also result in plumbing and irrigation issues.“It becomes a safety concern,” he said. “If you can’t open your front door because the foundations drop, you might not be able to get out during a fire.”As triple-digit temperatures persist in Texas, Bryant said he anticipates homeowners will likely continue noticing foundation issues.

Houses surveyed in April all of a sudden have major foundation issues, which is a clear indicator of the heat’s effect on homes, he added. The best way to prevent foundation issues during a heat spell is to make sure your lawn is green.
