Western-provided F-16s could allow Ukraine to assert dominance in the skies

Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren and Romanian Defence Minister Angel Tilvar at the European F-16 training centre in Romania are eagerly anticipating the arrival of F-16 fighter jets to help them beat back Russia in its expected summer offensive as Moscow continues to make gains in the east. The aircraft could arrive as early as June, according to the Belgian Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, although the first delivery is expected to include only about six planes, reports suggest.

Ukraine has lost at least 86 aircraft since the war began, while Russia is believed to have lost more than 100, according to the open-source intelligence site Oryx Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has claimed that Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian Su-25 fighter-bomber jet over the Donetsk region over the weekend. Russia is estimated to have had between 70 and 80 serviceable Su-25s before invading Ukraine more and than two years ago. Kyiv claims to have shot down around six of these.

“F-16s are a step forward but can’t see missions radically change. They will be a boost for Ukraine – they are more complex and better systems with wider variety of weapons that can be used.
