Sammie McFarland developed long Covid in 2020 alongside her daughter Now, she is the CEO of Long Covid Kids, a charity working to raise awareness of the condition This is how she manages her time as a parent, carer and CEO ⬇️
I have a very slow start to the day. Depending on symptom severity, I may or may not shower. I usually use the morning to check new research or any news articles that are relevant to the charity. I have a quick scan through the work’s WhatsApp groups to see if anyone has any urgent problems I need to help them with.I take my meetings from my bed. My team and I either do a Google Meets call or we do a voice note check-in, depending on the day.
Three years ago, I would have rushed from one thing to the next and not stopped in between. I don’t have that option any more. I’m kind of forced to take things slow, so I take a flask to drink afterwards on the beach. Then I do some breathwork. I used to teach restorative breathwork before I got long Covid. Now I use it to calm my systems down.voice notes and resolve any issues. Then I rest for a short while. That process of rest and then work will continue throughout the day.
To avoid burnout, I try to avoid screen time when I break. I love being outside in my garden; if I can get outside, then that’s always my favourite place to be.During the day, I am also caring for my daughter. Her symptoms can be really scary. She can often black out and faint. She also has severe abdominal pain. So in between my work, I try to give her a lot of reassurance. She will come into my room and we will talk about ways she can manage her symptoms. It’s difficult for teenagers.
