Jurassic World Dominion's Creature Effects Supervisor, John Nolan, explained how the film went about bringing Blue's baby, Beta, to life onscreen. Jurassic World Dominion premiered on June 10, 2022, and officially wrapped up the Jurassic World trilogy. The Jurassic World trilogy is a sequel, and continuation of, the Jurassic Park trilogy, which ran from 1993-2001. Just like the original film series, Jurassic World has a specialized focus on Velociraptors.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Jurassic World further expanded on the Velociraptors, making the film's protagonist, Owen Grady , a Velociraptor trainer for the Jurassic World dinosaur theme park. He grows a special connection to one of the Velociraptors, Blue. Blue turns up frequently throughout the first and second film, remaining connected to Grady despite the dinosaurs escaping and even saves them several times.
My favorite puppet just to see our puppeteers pick up a puppet that's laying on the floor and perform it, it was Beta, just simply because Derek Arnold, our puppeteer captain, is such an amazing puppeteer and his team, they could just pick it up and it would just come to life. When we had visitors or the cast, or even when we were shooting, people are just gasping because they would just suddenly bring this dinosaur to life with three people, it just looks incredible.
The fact that Beta is a puppet is certainly a testimony to the joint effort and talent of the visual effects, creature effects, and special effects departments on the set of Jurassic World Dominion. One thing that definitely made Jurassic World Dominion unique is the fact that it is a mixture of animatronics, puppets, and CGI.
Computer animation is greatly advancing, as there are now such works as Prehistoric Planet which have such advanced and cutting edge technology, that CGI dinosaurs can truly take on a life-like appearance. However, Jurassic World Dominion shows that CGI has limitations and that some creative use of puppets and animatronics can have almost the same, or maybe even a superior, effect as computer animation.
