Top-ranked Cougars are on track to be the No. 1 seed in the Midwest but could shift to...

“Houston is on track to make a No. 1 seed, but they have to avoid Quad 3 and Quad 4 losses the rest of the way,” Bender added. “Purdue, Alabama and Kansas — the other presumed No. 1 seeds — have been able to avoid those bad losses so far. The only other scenario that could knock the Cougars off that line is if they lose a few down the stretch and the Big 12 gets two No. 1 seeds.”which was the No. 5 overall seed in the bracket reveal.

The Longhorns enter this weekend tied with Kansas for first place in the Big 12. UT has 10 Quad 1 victories, the second most behind the Jayhawks, and has a chance to add to the total with remaining games against Baylor and TCU and Kansas . All the major bracket projections have UT as a 2 seed, although that could change with a win over Kansas.

Baylor, the 2021 national champions, has lost back-to-back games to Kansas and Kansas State. With the Big 12’s strength unrivaled this season, the Bears are still projected as a No. 2 seed. TCU, , could get late-season boost with the return of guard Mike Miles Jr., the Big 12 preseason player of the year who missed five games with a knee injury.. A year after being among the “last four teams out” of the field, Buzz Williams’ squad has gone 15-2 since Christmas, has six Quad 1 wins, and moved into the Associated Press poll at No. 25 this week. A&M beat Tennessee on Tuesday and still has SEC leader Alabama — which owns a half-game lead over the Aggies — to end the regular season.

As the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament, they needed to either win the tournament to get the automatic bid, or a minor miracle. They almost got that minor miracle, as they made it to the Final of the SEC tournament, eliminating Florida, Auburn and Arkansas in the process.
