Kore-eda Hirokazu followed up the international success of his film Shoplifters by making his first film outside Japan — directing a French screen queen.
A vision of souls in purgatory. A mother who promises to return, but never does. A riverside that bears witness to the aftermath of a terrorist attack.
Over the course of two decades and 15 films, Kore-eda Hirokazu has journeyed to the extremes of human emotion and back, all the while attempting to unravel the knottiness of existence through characters faced with great dilemmas — and often tragedies. It's a gargantuan task, but the Japanese director has proven himself up to the challenge time and time again. His previous effort,
, took out Cannes Film Festival's top gong for its humanisation of Japan's class struggles through a ragtag family of thieves bound by something stronger than blood: survival.Starring Juliette Binoche and Catherine Deneuve as a screenwriter daughter and an actress mother whose film-shoot reunion offers them a fraught chance of reconciliation, The Truth is Kore-eda's first film set outside his home country.
Kore-eda was inspired to work in French by his late mother, who was the cinephile of their household and took the family on cinema outings.
