How Korey Lee, Yainer Diaz compare in battle for backup behind Martín Maldonado

New general manager Dana Brown needs to better evaluate both backstops before anointing either one a long-term solution. The immediate focus for Lee and Diaz is to distinguish himself enough to earn a spot on the opening day roster.

Manager Dusty Baker indicated on Friday that Diaz will enter the game when Lee exits. Baker intends to rotate the competing duo this way throughout spring.
“The number one job of a catcher is to catch, call a game and hopefully throw some guys out, stop their running game,” Baker said. “Defense is number one at the catcher position. Hitting is a bonus, big-time. There aren’t many guys around like Pudge Rodriguez or Johnny Bench. Whoever is catching is my on-field general, he’s second in command behind me. Number one, you have to catch.”
Maldonado’s continued presence proves the Astros accept a meager offensive output from their catchers. Lee still must harness a more consistent offensive approach. He finished 4-for-25 during a brief major league cameo last season, but battled some nasty dry spells in Sugar Land.
