The U.S. Army athlete’s 2:07:56 finish in Amsterdam was the fastest marathon debut ever run by an American.
“I just took this race as any other normal road race,” Korir said. “I mentally prepared myself that I was going to run and try to hang in with the experienced runners until 30K, then hang on until the end. I was particularly inspired by Eliud Kipchoge trying to run 1:59 in the marathon. I told myself, ‘let me break 2:10 for a start.
“I had some issues with my hamstrings before Doha but I was getting treatment and i just stayed positive and hoped that I was gonna feel better,” Korir said. “Injuries are part of every sport and as a runner, you have to learn how to handle them and deal with them.” While Korir felt his hamstring tighten up in the last five miles in Amsterdam, he was able to push through the pain by focusing on the present. “The last five miles were painful but I ran through it and knew that pain is temporary,” Korir said.
As his past performances indicate, Korir has developed a reputation for pushing through pain and striking at the exact moment the race begins to heat up. An example of this tactic was seen at theWhat a finish to the men's half marathon!
