Paula Konedaris, who has autism, didn't talk until she was five years old. Her mother says at that age Paula joined Girl Guides and her development since has been amazing.
At that age, the Tennant Creek local, who has autism, joined Girl Guides in her home town in the Northern Territory and found herself wanting to make connections with other members of the group."I wanted to talk to other girls … because some girls in Girl Guides are friends."Paula says she wanted to talk to other girls at Guides.Paula's mother Jennifer Konedaris said her youngest daughter's development was "absolutely amazing".
"Some of these are definitely later in reaching their early speech and language milestones, but might actually go on to develop fluent speech," she said. Tennant Creek Girl Guides tries to "give girls a voice" and although that has been literal in Paula's case, group leader Kirsteen Squires said more broadly it was about encouraging girls and young women to be confident, assertive and feel empowered in society.
Ms Baldwin said Girl Guides membership had dropped off for a number of reasons, including lack of awareness of the organisation, changing attitudes, young people having more access to different types of extra-curricular activities, and more recently the increased cost of living and COVID-19.
