After being supported at school, Rathouski benefited from emergency accommodation, wraparound services and social housing until she was able to buy her own home. Last year, when she was 22, that dream became a reality. “The private rental market is the next step down from ownership and beyond that in the context of dwindling social, affordable and public housing supply, it does cascade into an issue of insecure housing and homelessness,” she said. “When rent values are rising, high-income earners can move to the next affordable market, but lower-income households have nowhere to go.Borrowers faced pressures due to high interest rates, but had greater ability to respond and were less likely to become homeless.
