Shadow climate change and energy minister Ted O’Brien has demanded the federal government be upfront about any ambition it may have to host the COP31 climate talks in 2026.

One of the most famous outcomes of any COP meeting was the Paris Agreement in 2015 where 196 parties agreed to pursue efforts to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, according to the UN's website. Federal Labor indicated prior to winning the 2022 election it was keen on hosting a COP alongside Pacific partners.

“ three things Labor should do. Tell the Australian people if they want to host the climate change summit, what commitments are they making. Two, how much will it cost. Three, who do they expect to pay .Mr O’Brien said Labor ought to be upfront and honest should they have any ambitions to host the climate talks.

Defence Minister Richard Marles was also asked about the possibility of Australia hosting COP31 in an earlier interview on Sunday.
