In another time, when footy was a less complicated code, Jordan De Goey and Collingwood would have committed to one another weeks ago. | ANALYSIS by JakeNiallTHEAGE
Any new Pies deal for the star would contain behavioural clauses, sources said.
The president Jeff Browne has a resume that mixes an old school footy background - he played Collingwood under 19s and worked as the AFL’s lawyer - with the kind of company directorships and chairman positions that are widespread on business-focused AFL clubs. It’s conceivable that board members, and potentially some staffers, will still be opposed to De Goey’s retention, on cultural and/or commercial grounds.
The other complications are that the higher ladder position has negated the likely compensation draft pick for De Goey if he went to St Kilda or elsewhere. Had the Pies been mired between 11th and 16th, where pundits expected, letting De Goey go would be an easy call. To lose him, but gain a top six or seven pick - and save salary cap space for a later launch on A-graders - would make sense. But for pick 14-16, it’s a harder sell.
