Half a dozen beachfront properties crown Sullivans Bay in Sorrento, most with boatsheds, and three with private jetties slicing across the 400-metre stretch of exclusive foreshore. Mornington councillor Sarah Race said the decision had set a "dangerous precedent" for councils trying to juggle coastal development with the risks of climate change and rising sea levels."If we're going to not literally draw a line in the sand here, when do we draw that? When do we start taking the responsible decisions to stop allowing development on the coast?" Cr Race said."Councils work in the future.
"So the downside is it's happening now, the upside is that the real impacts ramp up over time, which does give us a bit time to plan and to act and to adapt.""I suspect all of us would like the Victorian coast to be natural and to be usable as a coastal space for us, so we're faced with some really difficult decisions in the next, I'd say, two to three decades.
