ANALYSIS: The botched decision, grand slam chaos and a villain turned victim: Djokovic saga isn't over yet

Undoubtedly a bold call, it comes from a government very keen to embrace the mantra of former prime minister John Howard: we will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come.

All indications are that Djokovic will appeal the decision, setting up the prospect of another messy court battle that could stretch into the Australian Open. From COVID villain to border victimBut confusion between the state and federal governments and Tennis Australia meant it was little wonder there would be chaotic scenes when the tennis player arrived last week.

It's little wonder there was white-hot anger when news emerged that Djokovic was flying into Australia. Yet if it had let him in it would have been accused of having one rule for most people and another for the rich and powerful. Also supporting the push to let him stay were Coalition politicians opposed to any form of COVID-19 restrictions — though their support had little to do with wanting the see the world's best male tennis player in action.

The only trouble — it was the government that inserted itself into that hard spot in the first place.
