A look at the positives and negatives of over-the-air updates and their role in providing an endlessly connected future for our cars.

It used to be that our cars would only evolve when we made it happen, either thanks to modifications we wanted or repairs we needed. You'd never wake up one morning to find a new button on your center console or a sudden boost in your fuel economy.

Increasingly, all that happens wirelessly, which is where the"over the air" part of the update comes from."In some cases, these updates are delivered via a cellular connection. In others, Wi-Fi can be used as an alternative delivery method," said Cisco's Laura Perek, the company's global transportation sector expert.

Not all code in the car requires access to the same onboard systems. Some mission-critical bits of software will need access to core functionality like steering and braking. Other, less crucial stuff might only need to use the car's speakers. BlackBerry's QNX, foundational software that runs in many leading manufacturer's cars, takes that a step further with its integrated hypervisor, a virtual architecture that allows different aspects of a car's software to run in wholly separate environments, with no way of crossing the proverbial streams.

Think about the improvement we've seen in tire performance in just the past decade. Cars could also be updated to work better with new, higher-grip rubber. "The vehicle is no longer an isolated entity but is now connected to a larger ecosystem," Perek said."Some examples include in-vehicle voice assistant controls, updated navigation and maps, new safety features, improved EV battery management, or a digital twin of the vehicle. This has enabled manufacturers to start to shift to a revenue and delivery model that is based on ongoing services, rather than a one-time sale.
