Scammers are exploiting the rise of new technology to steal information, now targeting the popularity of QR codes. QR codes increased in usage during the COVID-19 pandemic and have now become commonplace everywhere from restaurants and parking to street advertising and business cards.

Federal government services, such as Services Australia, have warned of scams impersonating them. Users are urged to scan QR codes and are then directed to enter their personal data. Cybersecurity firm Mailguard also recently warned its users about a QR code scam targeting Microsoft users via email. Scammers include a QR code in their emails — leading to a malicious URL — in an attempt to bypass scam filters, Mailguard explained.
