Australia is one of few countries conducting experiments on how it can cut down the flight time from one country to another.
It was reasonable to expect commercial airlines would achieve speeds of Mach five, or 1.7km a second, said Dr Fabian Zander and Professor David Buttsworth of the University of Southern Queensland.
