It seems despite the Tasmanian government's assurances it wouldn't back down from its commitment to pokies reform, long-held concerns the premier would walk back support for a cashless gaming card were on the money.

It was the rumour that refused to die — that the Tas manian government was planning to drop or water down its nation-leading mandatory cashless gaming card to appease the powerful hospitality industry. Tas manian Premier Jeremy Rockliff tells those seeking to support a no-confidence motion in his leadership that if it is successful it will result in a state election less than eight months after the last one.

"We believe that the most practical way forward is to work with other states," Mr Rockliff told parliament on Tuesday. The report is not public, however when asked, the government said it would consider releasing "aspects". "While I'm of course very disappointed that the policy has been deferred, I am somewhat satisfied at the very least that it is deferred and has not been destroyed," he said. The Premier maintains that his government is "committed to pre-commitment" and it will be implemented "as soon as practicable"

The Victorian government has said it would introduce legislation by the end of 2024. Next week is the final sitting week. "The notion that Tasmania, with its small population and gaming industry, could bear the immense financial and logistical burden of this system is not only unjustifiable, but irresponsible," it said in a release last month.
