“If there may be a player that isn’t going to play this year, are you OK with that?” Caserio said. “Are you comfortable with that? You might be. What is the draft capital that you have to allocate to that particular player? So, you’re worried about this year, but part of my job is to worry about the long-term position of the franchise and try to put ourselves in the best position possible.”
Think back to last year’s draft. The Texans picked quarterback Davis Mills at No. 67 overall near the start of the third round. They weren’t scheduled to pick again until No. 109. Suddenly, wide receiver Nico Collins dropped into draft slots the Texans didn’t expect he’d reach. Drafting primary starters and playmakers becomes exponentially more difficult beyond the first round, and the Patriots struggled to land such players in comparison to other NFL teams when drafting in the second and third rounds while Caserio was New England’s director of player personnel from 2008-20.
Caserio currently doesn’t wield a fifth-round pick in the upcoming draft. The Texans do have a surplus of late-round selections with three sixth-round picks and a seventh-round pick .
