With polls showing Labor could be on track to lose its lower house majority at next year’s federal election, the Greens have a chance at gaining real influence.

It’s a political strategy aimed at attracting disaffected younger voters who, especially during a cost-of-living crunch, appear to be fed up with the mainstream parties. The Greens could be on track to increase their power at the next election. The prime minister kicks off the 2025 election with a notional 78 seats – just above the bare minimum of 76 needed to govern alone. But since the late 1990s, governments fighting for a second term have shed an average of about 4.6 percentage points of their two-party vote, a result which could push Labor to below 70 seats.

argues householders are paying too much for their weekly supermarket shop because of a lack of competition. Economists called the plan “failed policies of the past”, and the Reserve Bank said it would make the shortage of homes even worse over the long term. This week in parliament, the Greens slammed Labor and the Coalition for teaming up to pass the government’s so-called Nature Positive Plan legislation, described by environment spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young as feckless. It will create a stand-alone Environment Protection Agency,“The Labor government might talk out both sides of their mouth on the environment, but they are on the same side as the Coalition and the polluters, and that’s how they voted in the parliament today,” Hanson-Young said.
