A look at where things stand for the Giants cap-wise after free agency and how they compare with the rest of the league.
Share to twitterNew York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman at the annual NFL owners' meetings on March 24. outlining the alarming numbers that revealed the New York Giants top-heavy cap situation.
There is still a long way to go, but as the numbers will reveal, general manager Dave Gettleman has things going in the right direction as far as the cap is concerned. At the start of the 2019 off-season, the Giants top-5 salary cap eaters accounted for just over 49% of the team’s cap liabilities. So where do things stand right now? The Giants, per the NFLPA public cap report, have just $10,680,273 of space left —nowhere near what they would need for their draft class, for any additional veteran free-agent signings they have their eye ontheir desired $8 million or so that general manager Dave Gettleman has said he would like to carry over into the season.
Besides the fact that nearly everyone associated with the team’s brass—from ownership through Gettleman to head coach Pat Shurmur—has said as much, the reality is the Giants do not have a better option on their roster at the moment.Even if they draft their next franchise quarterback this month, with the team looking to win games while building up the roster, Manning still gives them the best chance of that ahead of a rookie.
