I am not excusing his actions, but I think it is important to call out the shameful behaviour of some British media platforms. Morgan’s aggressive interview style was clearly not in good faith – but seemed to be an attempt to get Mizzy to act out even more while legitimising the verbal abuse of young people who are perceived as “miscreants”.
TalkTV’s Andre Walker went even further. Spluttering and screaming in an attempt to rile up viewers, he threatened to drag Mizzy out of the studio by his hair while calling him an “idiot”, all because he supposedly had a “threatening glare” for a fellow guest . Similar allegations of Black men and boys appearing “threatening” have been used to justify them being killed or sent to prison unfairly for far too long. And that history highlights why Walker’s words felt so loaded.
Reprimanding an immature prankster – of which there are countless others on TikTok of all races – for being an… immature prankster is hardly newsworthy. But when that prankster hasn’t had media training and is Black, young, outspoken and shameless, it presents an opportunity not just for a cheap “gotcha” moment, but to let racist viewers vicariously experience the thrill of furiously lambasting Black people like him. People they deem to be emblematic of society’s problems.
The last few weeks of platforming Mizzy show how unbalanced some parts of the mainstream media can be. Mizzy’s actions aren’t the only problem here – the real issue lies with the green light these largely white-led media companies give themselves to send a misguided young Black man around so they can publicly shame him and cash in on what they believe viewers want.
