Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan both went under the world record in the women’s 200m freestyle but can thank another swimmer for helping them post such a fast time.
The women’s 200m freestyle final at the Australian Olympic trials in Brisbane will live long in the memory.to touch out training partner and world record holder Mollie O’Callaghan.
Here are the key moments from a memorable four-lap dash at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre that sets up a tantalising duel in Paris next month.Titmus and O’Callaghan got all the plaudits for their remarkable times in this race but Shayna Jack influenced the result in a way that some might not have noticed.
Titmus is the opposite. She loves to take the race head-on and take an early lead, which she did to plan on laps two and three. Although Titmus didn’t break the world record in that event – she was six hundredths of a second short – her impressive 200m split showed she had put herself in a great position to post a sharp time in her individual 200m race.
The last 15 metres of a brutal 200m freestyle race boils down, more often than not, to who wants it more.
