The first supermoon of the year will take its place in the sky on Monday night as an astrophysicist reveals how to best view the lunar spectacle.
Australian National University Astrophysicist Dr Brad Tucker told Sky News Australia July’s lunar spectacle will reach complete fullness at 9.39pm AEST.
A supermoon is caused when the moon’s orbit is closest to earth at the same time it is full – making it appear bigger and brighter.“Seeing the full moon or the supermoon is actually best when its rising because that’s when you get the biggest effect when its rising in the eastern sky,” he said. Despite its closeness, cloudy skies are threatening to make it difficult for Australians in every major city apart from Hobart to see the July supermoon.
Dr Tucker said the moon may be able to peak through thin clouds which could ease throughout the night, but admitted it would be a"disappointment" if there was complete cloud cover.
