I spent my early twenties framing posters, my late twenties buying prints from dusty antique fairs. It was a gradual accumulation of wall decor that suited the modest dimensions of my prewar walk-up apartment in D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood. And then I moved to New York, and everything was wrong.

Of course, I had amassed far too much for my limited walls, but there was also the matter of scale. What I lacked in wall space, I somewhat compensated for in ceiling height, and my little prints that had formerly looked so cozy were dwarfed by the loftiness of my new apartment. Every time I hung something I’d formerly loved, it looked a sorry sight.
