Guilt can be a powerful motivator, indicating we’re not acting according to what the heart wants. On the flip side, it can also paralyze, steal our focus, and zap our mental energy.
This can be paralyzing and all-consuming.
Letting go of the need to control is easier said than done. It requires acceptance for outcomes that may not please you. If, say, you initially felt justified with a work decision, but then perhaps someone got upset, it’s important to try to accept it, and feel confident in the fact that you had your reasons.
Leaders have to make decisions that affect a wide range of people. It’s like walking a tightrope. Letting guilt into the room will impair your ability to lead effectively, particularly when it comes to letting people go, promoting one person over another, or choosing a course of action against the status quo.
This isn’t to say you shouldn’t consider the effect of a decision on all stakeholders, but rather, feel confident in the decision you’ve made once it’s done. The sooner you realize you ultimately don’t have control over all external events, perceptions, and reactions, the happier you’ll be; also, the sooner you’ll be able to move on with your life.Make a decision to lessen the guilt in some way, shape, or form. Taking action to resolve the matter will help loosen the guilt shackles. It doesn’t have to be an all-encompassing solution. It may be a temporary band-aid that bides you some time.Beating yourself up heightens the stress.
