And so low and behold, TPG and Optus have put down their guns and found an arrangement that works for both parties: an 11-year deal under which TPG will pay $1.17 billion to access Optus’ regional network. TPG gets to double its geographic coverage of the country without having to build its own network, while Optus can use TPG’s payments to speed up its deployment of 5G across regional areas.

With its shares struggling along near all-time lows, TPG also needed a win. Boosting its coverage in regional areas, at a cost it estimates is two-thirds cheaper than if it was required to build the network itself, instantly puts it on a better footing to fight Telstra and its new friends at Optus.
