Liam Martin doesn’t mind one bit if you call him a grub. He might even write it on his wrist tape come Sunday night.
Martin’s rough housing in Origin I has spawned a couple of back pages and faux outrage in Queensland, prompting he and his teammates to revel in the pantomime of what has become the “Temora terrier’s” rugby league calling card.
“Given the distance and that type of commitment, I didn’t think we’d see him all that much,” Jones says. “I wandered over, watched Marto belt two or three kids, wrote his name back down bloody quick smart and hoped no one noticed.”For the record, Maxine has noticed the melodrama surrounding her son this week, and is none too happy about it. She’ll be in the stands on Sunday, as she always is, having blown up on Sydney radio at Martin being singled out in a game where, “I saw more face massages than a beauty salon – they’re all rough out there”.
“I remember standing next to him at a scrum and his whole body was shaking because he was just that wound up in under-18s. He’s probably better at holding his temper now and being a bit calmer, but he’s still got that red head in him these days.”Entering the Origin fray last year, Martin came into NSW camp with the same mantra and a keen eye for a kindred spirit.
